FUNDAMENTALIST SEDUCTION
CONCEPT: "Fundamentalist Seduction" is an installation piece created as a symbolic analogy for the rise of American Christian fundamentalism and the deceptive manipulation it uses to attract those fearful of a changing world.
OVERVIEW:This piece consists of a six foot tall fiberglass figure mounted to an oak bench, with a foam/fiberglass arch backdrop; production time is six weeks.
PROCESS: This piece began with a series of maquettes within zbrush to create an initial design. The figure sculpt was then refined within zbrush and 3D printed in 104 pieces using an FDM printer. Once the figure was assembled it was then covered in a fiberglass skin, further sculpted using various epoxy clays and fillers, and bodyshopped to a smooth finish. The piece then received an extremely dark black automotive finish with a thick 2K clear to intentionally make the figure almost difficult to see with how dark it would appear. The cloak which covers most of the body was then gilded with 14k gold leaf, and the halo in aluminum foil leaf.
The backdrop was initially framed out in pine board, and covered in a layer of pink foam to create the walls and archway. The surface of the foam was then covered in a layer of PVA to create a barrier before a layer of fiberglass was applied to create a hard shell. The surface was then bodyshopped using automotive filler, and due to time constraints, painted using latex paint to match the gallery space.
