GRAVITY CONCEPT
SUMMARY: The beltline trail crossing at Irwin St. NE and Lake Ave. NE is a bustling and lively place. This piece aims to further activate an empty space with sculpture and bring energy to an otherwise unassuming space. “Gravity” will provide a destination along the beltline for families and individuals alike to take photos and enjoy along their walk across Atlanta.
OVERVIEW: The piece consists of four high strength fiberglass astronaut figures which are filled with solid, high density foam, built around a steel skeleton; each of the sculptures will be mounted to an underground concrete base via the steel skeleton.
PROCESS: All four figures follow the same fabrication pipeline. Each figure will be CNC milled from high density tooling foam and will be assembled around a steel square stock skeleton which will support the entire body. Then, a thick fiberglass shell will be built up around the milled foam core and with many of the details being constructed at this time using a hard epoxy clay. The figures will then receive another much thinner protective layer of fiberglass to insure they will stand up to the tests of the weather, kids, and some of nightlife adults who may get a little too excited. Each of the figures, in their own respective color, will then receive a protective high build automotive paint finish which will protect from scratches and sun damage for years to come.
